Introduction

Cyclosonics is a universal sound generation system for electric vehicles.  The Cyclosonics Throttlebox attaches to an electric throttle, and allows our mobile app to monitor your vehicle’s throttle.  The Cyclosonics app features a powerful sound synthesizer that modulates as your throttle changes.  The synthesis parameters that define the way your vehicle sounds are saved as presets.  We include a factory library of over 100 presets, but you can also access presets created by other riders, or design your own from scratch.  Any bluetooth speaker can be used to amplify your vehicle’s unique sound.  Cyclosonics is intended to enhance your riding experience, and make you safer by increasing the awareness of drivers and pedestrians.

Compatibility

The Cyclosonics mobile app is currently only available for iOS.

An Android version is in development.

Throttlebox is compatible with any electric vehicle that is equipped with a 0-5V electric throttle with a current supply of atleast 400mA.

Each Throttlebox is equipped with both male and female 3 pin HIGO connectors with 3” cable leads.

HIGO connectors, sometimes called Julet connectors, are standard on many electric bikes.  The Throttlebox connectors are wired as follows:

Pin 1 Signal

Pin 2 +5V

Pin 3 GND

Adapters can be used to connect to many other types of vehicles.

TESTING

In an effort to provide the best customer experience we can, we are constantly testing Cyclosonics on new vehicles.  If your vehicle is listed above with a 🟨 symbol, we are actively seeking a test subject for this model.  Riders who help us test will receive a free adapter as well as direct support and troubleshooting.  Please apply for our pilot program if you’re interested in helping us test an adapter.

Cyclosonics is intended to be a universal system. We will continue to create new adapters to expand compatibility.  If you find that your vehicle uses an incompatible connector or wiring scheme, please contact us directly.  In many cases we can create a tailor made solution.

Installation

⚠️

Installation should only be performed while the vehicle is turned off.  Remove the battery if possible.  Never work on or disconnect the vehicle’s electronic circuitry while the vehicle is on.

  1. Trace your vehicle’s throttle cable to it’s first connector.  The connector type will vary between manufacturers and models.
  2. With the vehicle turned off, unplug the connector.
  3. If you are using an adapter, plug both sides in to your vehicle’s throttle connectors.
  4. Plug the adapter into both Throttlebox connectors.
  5. Power on your bike and check the display for error messages.
  6. Download the Cyclosonics app from the App Store.

Setup

  1. Connect your device to a bluetooth speaker of your choice.
  2. Open the Cyclosonics app and enter your email.  You will be sent a sign-in link.  If it is your first time using the app you will be asked to verify your age and create a username.
  3. Open the menu and press “Setup”.
  4. With your vehicle turned on, press the “Discover Input Devices” button.
  5. Select your Throttlebox as the input device.
  6. Press the “on/off” button to turn the sound engine on.

Calibration

The first time you use your Throttlebox, you should calibrate the throttle range.  This can be done easily on the “Setup” page.

  1. Connect to your Throttlebox using the Setup instructions above.
  2. Turn the sound engine on using the on/off button.
  3. With the vehicle turned on, increase the “Throttle Minimum” slider until the sound’s pitch stops descending.
  4. We recommend leaving the “Throttle Maximum” slider at it’s maximum value.  You can use “Throttle Maximum” to limit sound modulation in the upper range of your vehicle’s throttle, based on your preference.

Sound Design

The sound engine within the Cyclosonics app features a 5 voice subtractive synthesizer, with selectable waveforms, volume and pitch LFOs for each voice, and a selectable filter on each voice.

Global Parameters define the following:

Throttle

Follows your vehicle’s throttle. Slider can be used independent of your vehicle for testing and previewing presets.  It will never affect the motion of the vehicle.

Center Note

The pitch from which all voices will be offset.

Pitch Multiplier

Defines how much the center note rises as the throttle is increased.

Speed Multiplier

Defines how much will the LFO speeds rise as the throttle is increased.

Drone Voice Parameters are voice specific.

Volume

Controls the volume of this voice.

Waveform

Selects the oscillator type.

Sine: Smooth, pure, and mellow tone

Square: Hollow, buzzy, and sharp

Saw: Bright, rich, and edgy

Noise: Chaotic, static, and texture-filled

Offset

A quantized, scale degree offset from the Center Note defined in the Global Paramters.

Amp LFO Amount

Controls the range of the amplitude LFO.  The amp LFO turns the volume of this voice up and down at a rate defined by the Amp LFO Speed.

Amp LFO Speed

The rate at which the Pitch LFO will modulate.

Pitch LFO Amount

Controls the range of the pitch LFO.  The pitch LFO turns the pitch of this voice up and down at a rate defined by the Pitch LFO Speed.

Pitch LFO Speed

The rate at which the Pitch LFO will modulate.

Cutoff Frequency

Adjusts the frequency point at which a filter begins to reduce the amplitude of frequencies, shaping the brightness or tone of the sound.

Filter Type

Selects the type of filter.  Lowpass removes high frequencies, Highpass removes low frequencies, Bandpass removes both low and high frequencies.

Filter Q

Controls the resonance peak of the filter

Updating Firmware

⚠️

Never connect to your Throttlebox’s USB port while it is installed on your vehicle.  Doing so could damage the Throttlebox as well as your vehicle.

Throttlebox features a USB port that is exclusively for updating the firmware.  Firmware updates will be performed using a web portal that is forthcoming.

Amplification

⚠️

In many places it is illegal to amplify sounds from a vehicle that mimic or could be confused with emergency vehicles.  Avoid and report presets that could be mistaken for emergency vehicles in your locality.

One key benefit of the Cyclosonics system is the flexibility to choose your own bluetooth speaker, and how you mount it.  Simply connect to the speaker using the bluetooth configuration settings on your iOS device.

JBL Bluetooth Speaker

It is important to select a speaker that is loud enough to produce a decibel level comparable to a combustion passenger vehicle - about 60 dB during low speed, city driving.  We recommend something like the JBL Flip 6.

In the US, the EVAS (Electric Vehicle Acoustic Sound) standard regulation mandates that EVs emit sound when traveling at speeds below 18.6 mph (30 km/h), with the sound intensity between 50 and 75 decibels.

Please be conscientious and avoid disruptive volume levels, especially in residential areas and school zones.  Be a good neighbor.
